Woman almost sold 1869 baseball card for 10

A 72-year-old California woman recently found a rare baseball card of the first professional team in the United States in her home.

And if it weren't for the intervention of a friend, she would have sold the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings card on eBay for $10. The card has since been authenticated by PSA. The team photo is relatively unscathed.

A German research team has developed tests that will help sports officials stay one step ahead of emerging performance enhancing drugs. The test detects a core chemical structure belonging to benzothiazepines.

These compounds stabilize protein channels that would otherwise "leak" calcium from muscle cells during strenuous exercise.

John Smoltz on the verge of signing with the Red Sox

John Smoltz has pitched his entire major league career with the Atlanta Braves, but he is on the verge of a deal with the Boston Red Sox, according to sources.

Smoltz, 41, has pitched in 708 games for the Braves, winning 210 games and earning 154 saves. Boston's proposed deal with Smoltz is for $5.5 million base salary, and $5 million in incentives
